Monster Drabbles (#16-20)

These were written for good__evil , and their October Monster Madness! Each day of the month belongs to a different monster, and authors post their drabbles on the designated day. I've managed one for each day so far.  These are from October 16the to the 20th and represent orc, giant, gnome, gryphon, and golem.

Monster: Orc

The army of hulking warriors was advancing quickly.  He stared at their mighty weapons, rusted and chipped from lots of hacking their enemies’ bodies.  Of all the armies he could go up against, the Orcs were the one for which he hadn’t been prepared.

His Mage cast a spell of confusion, but the spell was weak, and only the archers floundered.

They were advancing again.  Only thing to do was fight.  With luck, his knights might be able to take out the first ranks.

He rolled the dice and slid his tray of painted knights forward to charge the Orcs.

Title: Everybody’s Biggest Friend!
Author: Abelina (Abby)
Word Count: 100
Monster: Giant
Note: You would likely need to be Canadian to get the reference here, but it's explained at the end.

They stopped in the middle of the street, between two tall trees, watching the biggest chicken they had ever seen cross the road.

“Are you seeing this?” Buffy asked.

“Giant rooster?”

“Uh, huh.”

“Then yes,” Willow said.

The rooster cocked its head and blinked.

Buffy sighed.  “Do I slay it?  What do I do?”

The tall trees beside them moved, and from above they heard a very friendly voice.

“Look up.  Look waaaaaaaay up.”

The trees were legs.  The face looking down at them from way up high was blond and friendly.

“So,” he said.  “I see you’ve met Rusty.”

I have no idea if anyone else knows about The Friendly Giant, and maybe I’m the only one who gets the reference here, but anyway, it was a Canadian children’s show that ran forever, featuring the Friendly Giant and his rooster friend Rusty, amongst a few other characters.  The “Look up.  Look waaaaaaaaay up” followed by “and I’ll call Rusty” was the thing he said at the start of every show.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Friendly_Giant

Title: Roaming Gnome
Author: Abelina (Abby)
Word Count: 100
Monster: Gnome

“What is that doing there?”

“What?”

Buffy pointed to the jauntily tilted red ceramic hat poking out from behind the bush.  Reaching for her shirt and clutching it to her chest, she hauled the little beast out to take a look.

This,” she said, holding up the creature, whose grinning little face and Santa Clausy beard belied its sinister nature.

Spike rolled onto his back beside her.  “Afraid of a big bad garden gnome?”

“No,” Buffy said, reaching up into the hole in the bottom and extracting the camera hidden inside.  “But somebody’s about to be really afraid of me.”

Title: A Little Help Here?
Author: Abelina (Abby)
Word Count: 100
Monster: Gryphon

*~*

Spike knew he wasn’t going to make it out of this.  He had to trust that Buffy was safe and regretted that he wouldn’t see her before he dusted.  The fire blocked him in, and sunlight began infiltrating his small refuge.

A piercing cry came from overhead.  Spike looked up to see a beast, half lion, half eagle, swooping down toward him.  It scooped him up in its talons, and Spike wondered if there were worse ways to die than fire.

Later, he silently thanked his winged saviour as it flew away, from the safety of shelter and Buffy’s arms.

Title: Just Another Day in the Buffyverse
Author: Abelina (Abby)
Word Count: 100
Monster: Golem

*~*

“I swear that statue moves.”

Buffy frowned.  “Which one?”

“That weird one, over there.  The man-shaped one.”  Dawn pointed to the statue in question.

It was unlike the other statues in the courtyard, made of different coloured stone and instead of being intricately carved, it was severely lacking in detail.  Aside from its general man-like shape and a suggestion of a face, it was actually quite primitive.

“And you’re sure it moves?”

“Well, yesterday it was over there.”

“Hmm,” Buffy said.  “Hey, statue, get back to where you belong!”

The sisters stared with open mouths as it did just that.
